Why the AT Overland Habitat is a Great Option for Family Camping
A while back, we published a post comparing various AT Overland truck toppers. No matter if you go with the Atlas, the Habitat, or the Summit, you get a well-made, comfortable camping option for all sorts of environments and weather conditions.
But…if you look closely at each of these toppers (and options from other topper companies), one thing becomes clear - the AT Overland Habitat is a fantastic option if family camping adventures are on your mind.
The short explanation is that this topper is an ideal combination of size and space. On the one hand, the Habitat has a small form factor when it’s closed, which means you’ll get better fuel mileage on your trips. On the other hand, unlike other AT Overland models, the Habitat folds out rather than popping up. This means that despite its small form factor, the Habitat offers an enormous amount of space when set up.
That’s just one reason why this is the ultimate family camping option, though. Let’s dive into a few other reasons!
AT Overland Habitat Basic Specs
One of the best specifications of the AT Overland Habitat is that it can be deployed in just two minutes. The same goes for folding it up and stowing it when you’re ready to hit the road. When you have kids in tow, having the ability to set up and take down your tent in rapid fashion is a huge advantage. The less time it takes to set up and take down camp, the more time you have to spend time with your family doing fun stuff!
Another prime feature of this tent is its functionality. On the one hand, it has built-in writing raceways with two USB ports and a 12-volt automotive socket, giving you power options inside the unit. On the other hand, the sleeping platform is insulated, providing you with a more comfortable sleeping experience during spring, summer, and fall family camping trips.
Other key features give this truck topper even more usability:
- The roof can be walked on when closed and supports up to 600 pounds.
- The locking liftgate ensures security.
- Interior carpeting provides a soft, insulated surface for improved comfort.
- Interior LED lighting and lift gate LED lighting provide illumination.
Furthermore, the AT Overland Habitat can be used with many different trucks. Let’s dive into this amenity in more detail…
This Truck Topper Comes in Many Configurations

Needless to say, AT Overland ensures that you have a Habitat option for just about every popular type of truck currently available on the market!
AT Overland Habitat: Space for Family Camping
The standard AT Overland Habitat truck topper offers a built-in 48x87 mattress that can sleep two people. However, thanks to the design of this rig - which folds out and cantilevers over the rear tailgate area, there’s a second platform where the kids can sleep. This means a family of four can use the Habitat as a base camp for family camping adventures - and everyone has a comfortable spot to rack out each night.
There’s another benefit of this design: the cantilever portion provides you and your family with a spacious covered outdoor area. Even if the weather isn’t all that awesome, you and the family can get out of the tent and get some fresh air, whip up a meal, and enjoy the sights around camp without being battered by wind and rain. And since the entrance to the topper is under this cantilevered area, you can go in and out without having to brave the elements.
When open, the Habitat’s three-season tent is 186.5 inches long. That’s a lot of space for you and your family! The base offers even more space for lounging and gear storage. For example, the GLR5 option is 62.75 inches long, 61 inches wide, and 34.25 inches tall. The 8-foot option is 99.5 inches long, 70 inches wide, and 35.35 inches tall. The other Habitat models vary in size between these examples.
The point is this - no matter if you’re on a family camping trip in a full-size Ram, a ½-ton Silverado, or a compact truck like a Toyota Tacoma, the AT Overland Habitat allows you each to have enough space to stretch out, relax, and store your gear.
Keep Your Gear (and Your Kids) Organized in This Truck Topper
Related to the previous point about size is that the AT Overland Habitat gives you all the space you need for organizing your gear. For example, the tent comes with four size pockets for small items like phones, tablets, and car keys, so you can keep those items neatly tucked away where they won’t be lost or damaged.
As another example, the cantilevered part of the tent doubles as a gear loft. So, if you have one kiddo, there’s room in that area to keep additional gear. Or, if you and your significant other need a trip without the kids, the entire fold-out platform can be used to keep your stuff organized and out of the way.
Of course, as mentioned earlier, the lower part of the truck topper is open and available for yet more storage. Add storage trays and cubbies in strategic areas of the bed of your truck to expand your storage and organization options even further without limiting the usability of that space for other purposes.
The Build Quality of the AT Overland Habitat Ensures Years of Family Camping Adventures
One of the hallmarks of AT Overland is that their truck toppers are built to last. This is evident in the all aluminum and composite construction, which stands up to the harsh elements of camping without worry of mold or rot.
What’s more, the Habitat was designed with off-roading in mind. This truck topper is rugged and sturdy, and the rocking and rolling of navigating difficult trails won’t phase it at all. Furthermore, with stainless steel hardware and CNC-formed aluminum components, the topper’s moving parts are equally up to the task of working in environmental conditions of all kinds.
Heck, even the tent is bulletproof - the cotton/poly canvas is impregnated with wax for weather resistance. In fact, you don’t even need a rainfly with this tent because it’s rated for three-season use on its own. The tent material is fire retardant for good measure, too.
Better Family Camping Adventures Await
Part of the allure of a truck topper like the Habitat is that it offers a covered space for all your gear and ample room for lounging and sleeping, all without the fuss of having a top-heavy slide-in camper. Furthermore, you don’t have to worry about towing a trailer and all the extra work involved with that.
Instead, you can load up, hit the road, and enjoy your family camping adventures with far less setup and takedown time. In other words, truck toppers like the AT Overland Habitat allow you to have a better family camping experience. As a family-owned business, that’s an important part of who we are and why we do what we do! That’s why BTR - pronounced better - is in our name!
