4 Things to Know About the Tembo Tusk Ultimate Skottle Grill Kit
If you want to give your camping kitchen an upgrade this year, the Tembo Tusk Ultimate Skottle Grill Kit should be on your radar. This kit comes with just about everything you need to get your grill on at camp. The only thing you need to add is fuel and some food to cook!
But if you’ve never used a Skottle before, it can be a little intimidating. After all, this isn’t your grandpa’s old Coleman camp stove. It’s a complete system that combines the convenience of a propane stove and the ease of cooking with a cast-iron pan. It’s the best of both worlds!
Let’s dive into the Skottle and learn a little more about what it is, how to use it, and how to care for it, too.
The Ultimate Skottle Grill Kit Comes With Everything You Need
Picture this: you're out camping, surrounded by the beauty of nature, family, and friends, and the smell of a sizzling meal fills the air. After a day of exploring and adventuring, your stomachs are empty and ready for some good food, and the aroma of the dinner you’re preparing smells oh-so-sweet.
Now imagine cooking that meal on a do-it-all Skottle…
If you’re unfamiliar with the Skottle grill by Tembo Tusk, it’s an 18-inch grill with a gently curved form that makes cooking breakfast, lunch, or dinner an easier task. You can prepare one dish, two, or three different types of food at the same time (more on the process of cooking a little later).
The pan is pre-seasoned, so it’s ready to go from the moment you unbox it and put the Ultimate Skottle Grill Kit together. It’s not unlike your favorite old cast-iron pan - the more you cook with it, the more seasoned it gets, and the better your food will taste.
This kit offers more than just the grill pan, though. You get a Kovea Burner and gas adapter, which puts out 10,000 BTUs of heat. That’s a lot of heat! You can crank the burner up to the high setting to warm the Skottle grill, but for cooking, a low-to-medium flame is the ticket to a great meal.
Alongside the grill and burner is a set of adjustable legs, so you can set up your cooking station on any terrain, whether it's rocky, sandy, or uneven. No more struggling to find a flat spot for your grill! These legs are also collapsible, so when it's time to pack up and hit the road, you can easily return the legs to the included carry bag, and off you go.
But the Ultimate Skottle Grill Kit comes with a few other goodies, too:
- A stainless steel lid (which helps lock in the food’s flavor while also protecting you from hot oil splatters)
- A steam tray for steaming veggies, rice, and other side dishes
- A wind guard to protect the Kovea burner from going out on breezy days
- A bamboo leg table, which gives you prep space right at your fingertips
This Skottle grill also comes with a few freebies, like a tin of Buzzy Waxx for maintaining the grill, a wooden spatula to flip burgers like a pro, and a cast-iron plastic scraper to get any burnt-on leftovers off the grill surface. In other words, whether you're camping, tailgating, or just enjoying a backyard BBQ, the Tembo Tusk Ultimate Skottle Grill Kit has you covered!
How to Use a Skottle
Cooking with the Skottle really couldn’t be simpler. The first step is to unbox it and put it together. As you can see in our video above, it takes just a few minutes to get the Skottle ready to rock. Remember, it comes pre-seasoned, so once you have the grill together and add a fuel source - either propane or butane - you can start cooking.
Before adding ingredients to the grill, it’s a good idea to give it a quick coating of cooking oil. Then, simply press the push-button piezo ignitor on the Kovea stove, then turn the knob to adjust the flame. As noted earlier, you can crank the heat up to get the Skottle nice and hot, but it’s necessary to reduce the flame to cook so you don’t scorch all your food.
The sweet spot for cooking on a Skottle grill is the center part of the pan. If you’re cooking multiple elements, keep the uncooked food in the center of the grill and move cooked food to the edges of the grill to keep it warm.
With 18 inches of room from side to side, you can cook multiple hamburgers in the center of the grill while you keep cooked bacon toasty warm on the sides of the grill, or get some breakfast potatoes done, then shift them to the side to make room for some thick-cut bacon. The possibilities are endless. It makes you want to go camping so you can cook, doesn’t it?!
Maintaining a Skottle is a Breeze
The Skottle isn’t just easy to put together and use; it’s also really simple to maintain.
Basically, you care for a Skottle grill like you would a cast-iron skillet. Add some oil to the grill with some coarse salt and use a washcloth to rub the mixture all over the grill surface. Then, use the included plastic scraper to remove any burnt-on residue.
If that doesn’t do the trick, you can also add water to the Skottle and boil it, which will help loosen that hard-to-remove food residue. Then, grab the plastic scraper and gently scrape it away. Once you’re done, give the grill a light coating of cooking oil, and you’re all set for the next use!
The Ultimate Skottle Grill Kit is Extremely Portable
When you’re camping or overlanding, the chances are good that space is at a premium. Having camping accessories that are compact, lightweight, and easily portable is a great way to maximize the limited space you have in your vehicle or trailer.
The Skottle grill is just 18 inches across, so it’s a nice balance between a large enough cooking surface without being so large that you have nowhere to put it in your rig. The carry bag (shown above) is actually two bags - one for the Skottle and another for the collapsible legs. The leg bag then slides into the back of the Skottle bag so you can easily carry it to and from your vehicle.
At the end of the day, the Skottle grill is just what the doctor ordered for your overlanding cooking needs. It’s easy to transport, easy to set up and tear down, and does a fantastic job of cooking foods of all kinds. What’s not to like about that?!
