This Expedition Trailer Will Go Anywhere Your Vehicle Can
For folks like us who love the thrill of off-road travel and the freedom of overlanding, few things are as essential as the right gear. Whether you're taking on rocky trails, finding your way through dense forests, or camping under the stars in the middle of nowhere, your gear can make or break the journey. That’s where a reliable expedition trailer becomes your most valuable companion, helping you carry your gear, food, and shelter wherever your adventures take you.
One trailer stands out from the rest when it comes to rugged capability, thoughtful design, and affordability: the Sherpa Trailers Expedition. With its solid build, compact size, and versatile features, this expedition trailer is designed to go anywhere your tow vehicle can.
In this article, we’ll explore the joys of overlanding, the demands of off-road travel, and why the Sherpa Expedition is the ultimate choice for all your adventures.
Why We Overland (and Why a Trailer is a Great Overlanding Companion)
Overlanding is more than just a type of travel—it’s a lifestyle rooted in exploration and self-reliance. Unlike traditional camping trips, overlanding emphasizes the journey itself, taking you to remote locations that few others have experienced. Whether you’re crossing huge deserts, climbing mountain trails, or cruising through wooded backroads, overlanding allows you to get in touch with nature while relying on your own resourcefulness.
The benefits of overlanding are endless, too. It provides an escape from the stresses of modern life, offering the chance to disconnect from technology and reconnect with the natural world. Overlanding also fosters a sense of accomplishment, as each trip demands careful planning, problem-solving, and adaptability. Plus, the remote destinations you reach often reward you with incredible views and a profound sense of solitude.
However, overlanding comes with its challenges. Limited access to supplies and unpredictable terrain means you need to be fully prepared for anything. This is where having a purpose-built expedition trailer like the Sherpa Expedition is a game-changer. With its ability to haul everything you need—from fuel and food to camping gear—this trailer ensures that you’re ready for whatever the journey throws your way!
Why Off-Road Adventures Demand Purpose-Built Gear
Off-road travel is no walk in the park. The difficult terrain you’ll encounter demands equipment that can handle extreme conditions. Every detail matters when you're venturing off the beaten path, from the tires on your vehicle to the gear you pack.
One of the biggest challenges of off-road travel is ensuring that your equipment can withstand the elements. Mud, rain, snow, and dust can take a toll on even the most well-built gear. That’s why an expedition trailer is essential for serious adventurers. Unlike standard trailers, off-road trailers are designed with durability and versatility in mind. They’re built to handle the roughest conditions, keeping your gear safe and secure no matter where you go.
The Sherpa Expedition is a great example of this philosophy. Its sturdy construction and off-road capabilities make it a reliable companion for any adventure. This trailer is equipped with 31-inch off-road tires, a straight Dexter axle, and a powder-coated steel chassis. As a result, it’s designed to tackle the toughest trails without breaking a sweat.
The Sherpa Trailers Expedition: Built for Any Adventure
When it comes to expedition trailers, the Sherpa Trailers Expedition stands in a league of its own. Compact yet packed with features, it’s the perfect blend of functionality and durability, designed to complement any overland adventure. Here’s what we mean…
At just 4 feet by 6 1/2 feet, the Sherpa Expedition is compact enough to maneuver through tight trails while still offering ample storage space. It weighs only 780 pounds, and with 60 pounds of tongue weight, it’s incredibly lightweight and easy to tow, making it ideal for a variety of vehicles. Despite its small size, this expedition trailer is big on practicality, ensuring you can bring everything you need without feeling weighed down.
The Sherpa Expedition is built for the rigors of off-road travel as well. It has 31-inch tires that can handle rough and uneven terrain with ease. The straight Dexter axle and powder-coated steel chassis provide additional durability, ensuring the trailer can endure years of heavy use. Whether you’re tackling muddy trails in Texas, sandy dunes in Colorado, or rocky paths in Montana, the Expedition’s robust construction ensures you’ll reach your destination without issue.
One of the best features of the Sherpa Expedition is its thoughtful storage design. The trailer includes two separate cargo compartments—one in the front and one in the rear—to keep your gear organized and secure. The front compartment features two doors for easy access, while the rear compartment boasts a 3-foot-wide barn-style door, making it simple to load and unload larger items. This smart design ensures that essential items like fuel, food, and camping gear are always within reach and neatly separated.
Practical Benefits of the Sherpa Expedition
The Sherpa Expedition is a tool designed to make your adventures easier, more enjoyable, and more efficient. The question is, how does it accomplish this?
First, towing a trailer doesn’t have to be complicated, and the Sherpa Expedition makes it as simple as possible. With a 2-inch ball and 4-flat wiring connector, it’s compatible with a wide range of vehicles. Its lightweight design and maneuverability mean you can easily navigate tight spaces, from winding forest trails to crowded campsites.
When you’re out in the wilderness, the last thing you want to worry about is maintenance. The Sherpa Expedition’s vinyl flooring makes cleaning up dirt, mud, and spills a breeze, while its durable construction materials—including carpeted interior walls and a powder-coated chassis—ensure it’s built to last. This expedition trailer is designed to withstand the elements so you can focus on enjoying your adventure.
Additionally, whether you’re hauling gear for a weekend camping trip or getting ready for a weeks-long overlanding expedition, the Sherpa Expedition is up to the task. Its heavy-duty 3-bar roof rack can accommodate a rooftop tent of any size, giving you the flexibility to set up camp wherever you please. The trailer’s spacious compartments provide plenty of room for gear, while its compact size ensures it won’t slow you down as you drive, either.
Another Go-Anywhere Sherpa Trailer
If the Sherpa Expedition doesn’t quite tick all the boxes, you might consider its big brother, the Sherpa Trailers Bigfoot…
The Bigfoot is equipped with 31” 10-50 R-15 tires, which offer superior traction on tough trails. Heavy-duty aluminum fenders with batwing steps on each side make accessing roof-mounted gear effortless, while a straight Dexter axle with leaf spring suspension (1400 lb. springs on each side) ensures a smooth ride over uneven ground. The 2” rear receiver allows for mounting a bike rack or cargo rack for additional utility if need be.
Despite its compact dimensions, the 5 ft. x 8 ft. cabin offers plenty of space (it easily accommodates a queen-sized mattress). The interior is carpeted for a cozy feel and includes thoughtful storage solutions like cubbyhole compartments and bunk-style carpeted shelves (2 ft. deep) with sturdy aluminum cleats. Dual adjustable screened windows on each door provide excellent cross-ventilation, complemented by a side vent and a 12-volt fan for added airflow for those hot and muggy days.
Inside, you’ll also find a 6-outlet power strip mounted on the rear bulkhead, powered through an external inlet that’s compatible with shore power or a generator. With the included roof rack, the Bigfoot can even support a rooftop tent, making it an ideal base camp for larger groups or families.
The Bigfoot’s walls and floor are made from ¾” exterior-grade plywood and finished with 24-gauge sheet metal flashing for durability. Inside, the mahogany plywood ceiling is reinforced with 2x4 ribs pocketed into the sides for added sturdiness. The insulated roof features 1 ½” foam, a hardboard underlayment, and a two-piece 040-aluminum outer skin to help keep the cabin’s temperature regulated.
For a personalized touch, Sherpa Trailers offers 23 color options for the trailer’s exterior sides. We currently have white, gray, and green Bigfoots on the lot. Each trailer in stock also sports these optional features:
-
Two doors with adjustable screened windows.
-
Mounted roof rack with two crossbars.
-
LED interior and exterior lighting.
-
A rear door (45"x40") for easy access.
On top of all that, the Bigfoot is just 1,300 lbs. dry with a tongue weight of 140 lbs., so it’s easy to tow with most vehicles. A wheeled jack on the tongue makes maneuvering the trailer a breeze, too, and dual rear stabilizer jacks ensure stability when parked. The trailer connects with a 2” ball and requires a 4-flat wiring connector for the LED exterior lighting.
In other words, if you’re after an expedition trailer that’s just a little larger and has more amenities than the Sherpa Expedition, the Sherpa Bigfoot might be exactly what you’re looking for!
