Small Space, Big Ideas: Inspiring Interior Designs for Family Campervans
If you're on the hunt for a family campervan that combines comfort and functionality, you're in the right place. As avid campers ourselves, we understand the importance of a well-designed interior for creating unforgettable (in a good way!) camping experiences. In this article, we'll dive into the world of campervan interior design, exploring innovative ideas by the BTR team to make the most of your small space on the road.
The Significance of Interior Design
When it comes to campervans, size matters, but so does design. The interior of your campervan can make or break your camping adventure. Imagine cramped quarters, uncomfortable seating, and inefficient storage – it's a recipe for frustration. On the flip side, a well-thought-out interior can turn your campervan into a cozy, functional home away from home.
> Comfort and Functionality
Let's face it; camping in a small space requires a certain level of creativity. It's about finding the right balance between comfort and functionality. You’re not going to be able to cram every luxury you can think of in a van chassis. But, you can get the necessities plus a few of those luxuries; you just have to decide what’s most important. As van campers ourselves, we've experienced firsthand how a thoughtfully designed interior can transform even smaller campervans into family-friendly retreats (the Hanner family camps 6, 2 adults and 4 kids, out of a campervan on a Chevrolet chassis with a pop top)
> Storage Solutions
One of the biggest challenges in campervan living is storage. Finding places for clothing, gear, and essentials can be a real puzzle. However, innovative storage solutions can help you keep your space organized and clutter-free. From under-bed drawers to ceiling-mounted racks and nets, there's no shortage of clever ideas here at BTR. We love specialized containers and bags that are sized to fit in specific areas/compartments. These are wonderful for maximizing usable space and knowing where things are. Everything has its home in the van.
Space Optimization Techniques
Now, let's explore some space optimization techniques to make the most of your family campervan:

> Multifunctional Furniture
Consider furniture that serves multiple purposes. Convertible tables, for instance, can serve as both a dining area and a workspace. We needed the extra seating with 6, so we have a bus seat for 2 that flips up against the wall out of the way when we get to camp Think about how you can maximize each piece of furniture…multi-use is ideal.
> Foldable Everything
Folding chairs, collapsible sinks, and retractable faucets can save precious space when not in use. This flexibility allows you to adapt your campervan's layout according to your needs. If it folds up, it takes up less space. And, that’s always a win in a campervan.
> Hidden Compartments
Hidden compartments are a camper's best friend. Utilize overhead, under-bed or seat storage, secret panels, and pull-out drawers to stash away items you don't need every day.
Family-Centric Layout Ideas
If you're traveling with your family, you'll want an interior layout that caters to everyone's needs. Here are some family-centric layout ideas:

> Pop Tops
In our experience, the pop top is THE ticket to being able to comfortably camp out of a campervan with more than 2 people. So if you want to camp with the whole family or take friends, we feel like this is by far the best way to do it. Our specialty is vans setup for family camping. We’ve partnered with industry experts for our pop tops, and we almost always have units in stock set up with pop tops. So if you’ve never seen one, we’ll be happy to “show you the light” to more enjoyable camping in a van with more than 2 people. We’ve got more on the pop tops below.
> Dinette-to-Bed Conversion
A dinette that converts into a bed is a game-changer. It serves as a comfortable dining area during the day and becomes a spacious bed at night. Perfect for family meals and bedtime stories. Another great example of multi-use furniture
> Sofa-to-Bed Conversion
Same concept as the Dinette-to-bed, but if seating is more of a necessity, then this is a great idea. We have this in our van, as we needed the extra seating and seatbelts traveling down the highway. When we get to camp, this becomes Mom and Dad’s bed.
> Pet-Friendly Spaces
If furry friends are part of your family, consider pet-friendly design elements. Built-in pet beds or secure areas for crates can make your campervan journeys more enjoyable for everyone.
OPTIMIZE YOUR CAMPING EXPERIENCE NOW |
> Durable Materials
Choose materials that can withstand the wear and tear of the road. The flooring and walls can take a beating spending a week off grid. We like durable and easy-to-clean solutions for both. The other factor when considering materials is weight. Things like tile may be durable and really pretty, but they are heavy. Heavy is never a good solution in a van when you have limited payload capacities unless you like taking your vehicle to the shop and large service bills.
> Cozy Color Palettes
Select warm, inviting colors that create a comfortable atmosphere. Earthy tones and soft textures can make your campervan feel like a home away from home.
Innovative Features and Technology
Let's explore some innovative features and technology that can elevate your family campervan experience:
> Connectivity Options
Stay connected with onboard Wi-Fi and USB charging ports. These amenities are essential for families, especially if it’s several hours of highway time to get to camp or if you have teenagers who can't live without their devices. Or you could just unplug and disconnect… there is something to say about that too.
> Safety Options
Most of the van chassis that we choose to use have modern safety features like parking sensors, backup cameras, and others. These are big vehicles, but with modern cameras and sensors, they are much less intimidating to drive.
Elevate Your Space with Pop Tops
Now, let's talk about pop tops – a game-changer for family campervans. Pop tops are like magic extensions for your campervan:
> Extra Headroom
With a pop top, you gain extra headroom, creating a more spacious and comfortable interior. It's a game-changer, especially for taller campers.
> Additional Sleeping Space
Pop tops offer a lot of additional sleeping area, perfect for kids or guests. We've customized campervans with pop tops that comfortably sleep a family of five…even 6.
> Additional Storage
Often before we lower the pop-top to begin the sad journey back home, we’ll throw the kid's duffel bags or other soft goods up on the pop-top bed. It keeps stuff off the floor of the van.
> Easy Setup
One of the most remarkable advantages of pop tops is their effortless setup, which adds a significant layer of convenience to your camping experience. Unlike some complex tent or awning systems, raising and lowering a pop top is a straightforward process that can be mastered in minutes.
Imagine arriving at your campsite after a long day of driving. The kids are eager to stretch their legs, and you're looking forward to a peaceful evening under the stars. With a pop top, the setup won't add stress to your day. It's so convenient that even kids can actively participate in the process, turning it into a fun family activity.
All it takes is a few simple steps, and BOOM! Your campervan is transformed into a more spacious and comfortable living area. With the additional headroom and sleeping space provided by the pop top, your family can move around freely and sleep soundly, ensuring a restful night's sleep and a refreshed start to your next adventure-filled day.
> Versatility
The versatility of pop tops extends to different camping scenarios as well. Whether you're embarking on a cross-country road trip, spending a weekend by the lake, or enjoying a nature retreat, a pop top seamlessly adapts to your specific needs. So, no matter where your family's camping adventures take you, pop tops enhance both your comfort and the overall enjoyment of the journey. With the added space and sleeping areas, you’re able to make more memories with more people.
Budget-Friendly Design Ideas
If you're on a budget, don't worry – you can still create an amazing campervan interior. Here are some budget-friendly design tips:

> DIY Projects
Consider DIY projects to personalize your campervan without breaking the bank. We've seen campers get creative with handmade curtains, cushion covers, and even custom storage solutions. We stock a lot of the parts too for areas of the project like electrical if you want to do it on your own.
> Secondhand Finds
Scour thrift shops and online marketplaces for budget-friendly furniture and decor. A little upcycling can go a long way in transforming your campervan's interior.
And so…
Designing the interior of your family campervan is an exciting journey filled with endless possibilities. Remember that every family is unique, so your campervan should reflect your needs and preferences. Whether you choose to add pop tops, go for budget-friendly options, or splurge on innovative features, the goal is to create a space where cherished memories are made.
