4 Things That Make the Escapod TOPO2 the Ideal Overlanding Trailer
If you spend any amount of time on the road, in campgrounds, or off-grid, you know there are a lot of types and sizes of trailers. From teeny-tiny teardrops to massive fifth wheels, there is something for everyone out there.
Not all those trailers are ideal for overlanding…but the Escapod TOPO2 sure is!
The question is, what specs and features make this compact yet luxurious overlanding trailer the ultimate adventure buddy? Let’s find out!
This Overlanding Trailer Has a High-Class Interior
One advantage of the Escapod TOPO2 over similar trailers is its second-to-none interior. Think of it as a suite at the Four Seasons, but on wheels…
For starters, the cabin is surrounded by windows - including a huge Stargazer window above the head of the bed - which fill the interior with light. Where some teardrop-style trailers feel like cold, dark caves, the TOPO2 Voyager is just the opposite. Hop in, settle into bed, and easily take in the sights surrounding your trailer.
Secondly, the interior has tons of convenience and comfort features that you just don’t find in many small off-road trailers like this. On the one hand, the TOPO2 Voyager has heated mudrooms on either side of the trailer, so you can kick off your dirty shoes with a warm place to sit after a cool afternoon hike or bike ride in the fall.
On the other hand, the TOPO2 Voyager sports a six-inch-thick memory foam mattress that conforms to your body and provides support to your aching bones after a long day of adventuring. And with plenty of room for two, you and your significant other won’t have to fight for space to spread out and relax.
The TOPO2 model shown above has a few other interior goodies up its sleeve, too:
- Charging ports in the nightstands to juice up your devices.
- A laptop stand, so you can get some work done or stream your favorite movies in bed.
- A 12-volt air conditioner to keep you cool on those hot summer days.
- A Maxxair exhaust fan for bringing fresh air into the cabin.
- A Truma Combi Eco Plus heater to keep you toasty warm during cold-weather camping trips.
In other words, Escapod didn’t skimp on the details when they were designing this trailer. The TOPO2 Voyager might be capable of going way off-grid for a very long time, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a lot of creature comforts while you’re there!
You Can Take the Escapod TOPO2 Virtually Anywhere
Speaking of going off-grid for a very long time, the Escapod TOPO2 is built for adventures near and far, on-road and off.
For example, at around 2,000 pounds dry, the TOPO2 Voyager pictured above and below is easily towable by vehicles large and small. Hook it up to your Subaru for a long summer road trip, or tow it with your Tacoma to head to your favorite wilderness camping spot for the weekend. Whatever the case, this overlanding trailer is ready, willing, and able to go along for the ride.
The key to the TOPO2’s success is the Freeride suspension. This proprietary shock-in-spring setup offers up to five inches of independent travel on each side. Likewise, the softer springs Escapod uses offer improved performance over the bumps while minimizing how much the trailer leans through corners, making this trailer a dream to tow (and easy to control, too).
Paired with all-terrain AT/X tires, ample ground clearance, and a generous departure angle, this overlanding trailer can get up and over all sorts of obstacles, be they massive speed bumps in an RV park, large boulders along a backcountry trail or something in between. Like we said, it’s the ultimate overlanding trailer!
Cook Up a Storm in This Overlanding Trailer’s Galley
Of course, a proper overlanding trailer needs to provide more than a great towing experience and a comfortable place to sleep. That’s where the TOPO2’s galley comes in…
The galley is fully enclosed at the back of the trailer, so you don’t have to worry about the elements (or bears) getting inside and ruining all your grub. The model shown above and below offers tons of modular shelving to maximize storage space for dry goods, cookware, dinnerware, and other essentials. There’s even hidden knife storage to keep your blades handy for breaking down meat, cutting veggies, and other tasks.
This galley gives you everything you need to get your cook on, too. There’s an ENO two-burner stove on a slide for cooking meals and a stainless steel full-size sink for washing fruits and vegetables (and your plates after dinner).
All these features are smartly organized, too. The sink is positioned to the side to maximize counter space. The stove is hidden in a pull-out slide with a drawer underneath and a cubby above, so you don’t have to fumble around looking for your cooking utensils (or trip over a stove on a stand).
Just like the cabin, Escapod designed the galley to be wholly functional with features that are both convenient and make life easier. That’s not a bad combination!
Construction Matters for Overlanding
A lot of overlanding trailers use wood substrates with aluminum exterior components. The problem with this is that wood can rot and mold, while aluminum exteriors often have seams that can leak. The TOPO2 has neither of these.
Instead, Escapod builds the TOPO2 out of a single piece of composite fiberglass material. There is no worry about rust, rot, mold, or leaks. Instead, you can enjoy a trailer with a rock-solid structure with an infused PET core (which is made from recycled milk jugs) that adds to its rigidity and strength. Heck, this trailer even has molded rain gutters on the roof to direct water away from the cabin doors and galley hatch. Combined with the bulletproof materials used to construct the cabin, this design is guaranteed to keep you dry, even in an absolute downpour.
Now, it’s worth pointing out that building a trailer with a composite body like this takes more time and money. But that just goes to show that Escapod is in this game for the right reasons. They want you to have the best overlanding trailer money can buy, and this process certainly does the trick.
